Question:  For Grounding Electrode Conductor (GEC) what is the required identification color?

A) Green

B) Green with one or more yellow stripes

C) A & B

D) None

Answer:  D) None

There is no color code or identification requirement for a grounding electrode conductor (GEC). There is an identification requirement for equipment grounding conductors (EGC). The color green or green with one or more yellow stripes is the designated color for EGC. The equipment grounding conductors can also be bare(no insulation). The color green could also be used for a grounding electrode conductor, but it is an option and not a requirement.

Many think of the code reference of 250.119 which is for "Equipment Grounding Conductors" which does not apply per the NEC for Grounding Electrode Conductors.
