Wenatchee Home Inspections-Frost on the Pumpkin- Time to winterize the hose bibbs

Wenatchee Home Inspections-Frost on the Pumpkin- Time to winterize the hose bibbs (also known as sillcocks or spigots)

Now that the Wenatchee valley has had it first winter dusting it is time to make sure all the out hose bibs are ready for below freezing temperatures.
Failure to properly winterize a hose bibb can result in a significant interior basement water leak.

First, disconnect any hoses from the hose bibbs and drain the water from the hoses. Store the hoses inside during the winter to prevent damage.
The outdoor faucets known as a hose bibbs (or sill-cocks or spigots) will need to have its water supply turned off inside the house (if possible).
Typical Frost free type of hose bibb (sillcoc)

You will then need to drain water from the hose bibb by opening up the exterior faucet.
Typical older non-frost free hose bibb

You may also want to consider an insulated cover for the hose bibb to help ensure the pipe will not freeze.

If you are unable to turn the water off inside you may consider having a shut off installed or having heat tape on the pipes.
