Patterns- Using your observation skills during a home inspection.

Leavenworth and Wenatchee Real Estate Inspection Services

When we are observing the world around us we will see patterns. Things tend to repeat themselves both in nature and in the human modified world.

I am a puzzle guy, mostly Sudoku now but I try to keep doing some form of puzzles. This helps keep my mind sharper and I can actually get read on how well (or not so well ; ) my brain is seeing patterns.

During home inspection patterns can lead you to clues and observations.

Sometimes the pattern, or lack of there, will not jump out at you very quickly. But you must be open to seeing patterns.

Patterns of a front room Missing HVAC Register

Here is a front room. Take a good look at it. Observe the patterns… what do you see?

Sometimes the clue is subtle.

Now look at this picture and you will see the missing pattern.

Missing pattern in the front room

This is a home that has a heat register that has been covered with carpet since it was built. In this large room I am sure it has not helped with the heating and cooling.

In most modern homes you have the registers below the windows to mix with the air (draft) that comes from the windows. So not seeing it there broke a pattern.

“There are three kinds of men. The one that learns by reading. The few who learn by observation. The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence for themselves.”
