East Wenatchee, Okanogan and Douglas county Home Inspection- Training Wheels

Submitted by DonHester on Tue, 04/12/2011 - 19:26.

East Wenatchee, Okanogan and Douglas county Home Inspection- Training Wheels

As a Wenatchee, Chelan and Douglas county Home and Structural pest inspector in the state of Washington I need to maintain so many hours of training per year to be in compliance of my licenses.

For SPI (structural pest inspections) license training requirements are;

• Must earn 40 WSDA-approved recertification credits every five years

• Maximum of 15 approved credits towards official record each calendar year

 For Washington State Home Inspection License training requirements are;

 • complete 24 clock hours of approved home inspector education since you last renewed

Now these are minimum requirements.

I just attended a two day course sponsored by WSU-SPI Structural pest facility in Puyallup WA.

The WSU Research and Extension Center Structural Pest IPM Facility has been designed to fail. They have introduced various different building designs and environmental conditions that will lead to infestation by various wood destroying insects and organisms (WDO's). They are able to monitor the effects of these environmental influences on this building. They also employ an early Victoria home at the campus that they use to watch the natural effects of the environment on that building design and it is used as training facility.

SPI Facility

 Students get hands on instruction of methodologies and practical knowledge from industry leading experts of fields of pest management, pest inspection, home inspection, compliance, insect research investigations and building forensics professionals.

 The aim of this facility is to train SPI's and Home Inspectors in the proper identification of WDO's and conducive conditions that can lead to an infestation.

Now these training requirements may not be that strict, but it very important to maintain an education as the industry matures and evolves. Taking these courses not only give you the experience of the classroom but also gives you the ability to meet other professionals and share experience and ideas. I am able to develop a network of professionals that I can use as a resource for me and my clients.

As one instructor said "after you get to a certain level of expertise you must remember if you plane to coast you have to go downhill".

As a SPI and HI I try to give my clients the best knowledge, expertise and experience I can obtain. This means always learning from anyone and everyone. As professionals we all are in a state of constant change and learning.
