When you flip my switch you may just light me up.
Sometimes you just have to wonder what some people are thinking when they do something.
Here is an example from a recent home inspection. Someone actually installed a light switch within the shower area. While this would have some convenience of sorts in that you could switch the bathroom light from the shower. You would be playing a little russian roulette.
The issue is you may be turning on the lights but it may be lights out for you. This could be an extremely dangerous situation and of course it is not allowed. If you create a conductive path you would most likely get a very good shock and potentially electrocuted. This home had metal piping. So for those who want to know here is the code.
From the 2014 NEC (National Electrical Code)
404.4 Damp or Wet Locations
(C) Switches in Tub or Shower Spaces. Switches shall not be installed within tubs or shower spaces unless installed as part of a listed tub or shower assembly.
So you could have a switch in there but it would be apart of an assembly such as for a steam shower. This was a regular old snap switch. They did think enough to put a waterproof cover on it though. “The first principle is that you must not fool yourself... and you are the easiest person to fool.”
