Immunization Vaccinations for Home Inspectors

Immunization Vaccinations for Home Inspectors- Wenatchee and Chelan Home Inspections

After a recent post I was responding to a question and it made me think. As home inspectors should be getting ourselves immunized for the work we do?

Well in my case it is not an issue because I have gone through several immunization programs because I was a Hazmat and Emergency responder.

But as home inspectors we are much more likely to be exposed to human wastes and excreta which put us at risk for potential diseases (how many toilets have you touched?). Human wastes and excreta is considered a biowaste and has a higher potential both viral and bacterial diseases.

Common harmful bacteria and disease-causing microbes that can be found in human waste include salmonella, E. coli, cryptosporidium (Crypto), candida (yeast infection), cholera, parasites such as the ascaris worm and hepatitis.

Here is a link from the CDC on immunization and handling of human waste-Guidance for Reducing Health Risks to Workers Handling Human Waste or Sewage. Though we do not directly handle human waste we often handle handles that may have some on it. Bathrooms and kitchens are areas that will have a higher risk of contaimination associated with them.

The vaccinations suggested are tetanus (every 10 years), polio, typhoid fever, Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B vaccinations.  The only one I do not have is typhoid (I think ; )

I do not think most people really think about how much potential risk we assume when performing home inspection.

As home inspector we need to be vigilant and think about our safety.
