Does it register- Repurposing?

Does it register- Re-purposing?  Wenatchee and Chelan Home Inspection Services

Well I like repurposing and using items creatively. Recycling is very important and if we can reduce the items that heads to our landfills I think we should.

Every year, Americans throw away enough paper and plastic cups, forks, and spoons to circle the equator 300 times. Only about 1 percent of the over 7 billion pounds of PVC thrown away in the U.S. each year is recycled.

It is estimated that 251 million tons of consumer solid waste is generated each year in the U.S. and 66.8% was sent to a landfill or is incinerated.

So recycling and repurposing should be a good thing. But… we should only do so when the repurposing serves its purpose.

During this home inspection I came upon this little bit of repurposing. This creative mind saw that heat registers are about the same as them old foundation vents. Why buy a new foundation vent when I have this very handy item that will serve this purpose. Waste not, want not!

Not a bad thought other than two important factors. One, heat registers are not designed for the outdoor environment, two, and most importantly, they do not have any screens to prevent entry by pest, mainly rodents.

So here was the final result of this little repurposing project. The insulation in the crawlspace has been repurposed as nesting material by Mickey’s relatives.

I do not think this is what was intended.
