Fire testing of older vs newer home furnishing.

Submitted by DonHester on Tue, 08/14/2012 - 13:50.

Wenatchee and Quincy Home Inspection- Fire testing of older vs newer home furnishing.

We all have that nostalgia for those items of yesteryear. Here is an interesting take on that.

The “National Institute of Standards and Testing” performed a burn comparison of common household items from 40 years ago versus their modern counter parts.

Home furnishing from 40 years ago (legacy furnishing) were mainly made of natural materials such as solid wood, cotton, wool, silk and such.

Today’s home furnishings are constructed of mainly synthetic materials such as polyester, vinyl, open cell poly foam (cushions), plastics etc… These synthetic materials are petroleum based.  Firefighters refer to these synthetic materials as “frozen gasoline”!!!

Watch this video and keep your eye on the clock! I think you can guess what will happen.

(you may want to jump to the 2:20 mark)

Modern materials flashed over at 2 minutes and 40 seconds, the legacy furnishings flashed over at 29 minutes and 25 seconds. This is quite a difference in a time in an emergency.

Remember functional smoke and carbon monoxide detectors should be in every home. These are very inexpensive life safety devices.
