Sometimes as a home inspector I just have to shake my head. Or should I say bang my head against a wall.

I often think why someone does something and then think, if you are going to do that why do it at all.

Case in point... I did a home inspection several months back for a client preparing the home for sale. This in my opinion is always a very prudent move.

One of the findings was a very common one. The bathroom exhaust fan was venting into the attic. Not a huge deal in this case and should be easily corrected.

So they hire a contractor to come in and do some repairs and clean up. Then I get the infamous call to re-inspect what has been done.

So upon going into the attic I find this.

Not only is this repair not proper it is failing within a month or so of the installation.  Notice the ducting is unraveling.

Please someone remove this gentleman’s hammer.

Now here is the real kicker… I discounted the re-inspection fee because it was close to me, and my client was very nice (I thought). Then my client (or should I say was) got very upset at me because the contractor claimed it was installed correctly. His word against mine now!

Then she went on to say this is an older home and does not have to be up to modern standards (hmm where did that come from?).  Really!  If you correct something then you should bring up to current standards or get a variance from the local authority having jurisdiction.

Oh well, let it go and when the next home inspector crawls up there let them be the judge.
