Building Code Of The Day 04/09/2019 Resistivity of a grounding electrode

Submitted by DonHester on Tue, 04/09/2019 - 09:01.

“Building Code Of The Day”

Question:   When evaluating the resistivity of a grounding electrode as the temperature of the soil decreases, what happens to the soil resistance?

A) Decreases

B) Increases

C) No change

Answer:  ?) B) Increases

The resistivity of the soil is also influenced by temperature.

Figure 3 shows the variation of the resistivity of sandy loam, containing 15.2% moisture, with temperature changes from 20° to -15°C. In this temperature range the resistivity is seen to vary from 7,200 to 330,000 ohm-centimeters.

If you find any errors or have additional information that would expand on any code, building standards or manufacturer requirements please let me know.
